Sunflowers are not only a cheerful addition to your garden, they also provide nectar for pollinators such as butterflies and bees and in autumn provide seeds for birds to feast on. With our giant sunflowers, you can also win a fun competition!

This is how you can win the €100 gift voucher:

1) Plant the sunflower seeds and let your sunflowers grow!

2) Take a photo of the prettiest, tallest or funniest sunflower

3) Share your photo on Instagram or Facebook, tag @famflowerfarm and use the hashtag: #myfamsunflower

In October 2024 we will announce the 3 winners via our socials, they will also receive a personal message. Using the gift voucher code, you will soon be able to shop for €100 on our website. How your garden will flourish next year!

With these growing tips, you are sure to succeed:

Place: plant these giants in full sun.  All sunflowers need at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight a day, and more is better.  Sunflowers use the sun's energy to fuel their massive growth, so the more hours of sunlight the plants get, the more robust their growth.

Soil: Loosen the soil and top it up with compost, organic fertiliser or lava meal. The deeper you loosen the soil (up to 25-50 cm), the better they can expand their roots. These sometimes grow up to a metre deep into the soil. 

Space: When growing giant sunflowers, plant the seeds directly into the soil where you want them to grow.  Plant the seeds 40 cm apart in rows and don't plant them too deep (about 2 cm).  The more soil you give each plant, the bigger the plant will grow. If you want to win very fanatically, remove the least growing seedlings and give the sturdiest ones plenty of free space (a metre or more) all around. If you want to grow the biggest flower, remove all side shoots so the plant can focus its energy on that one main flower.

Care: Keep the soil moist by watering regularly until the sunflowers emerge above ground.  Remove weeds regularly. Once the plants are growing well, watering once a week is sufficient. To make them grow to competition size, feed them regularly e.g. with organic fertiliser.  If they catch a lot of wind, you can support them with sticks and string. 

Sunflowers don't need much other care, but pamper them a bit to get the most beautiful or biggest ones! We look forward to seeing your lovely photos on social media.

Zonnebloemen zijn niet alleen een vrolijke toevoeging in je tuin, ze bieden ook nectar voor bestuivers zoals vlinder en bijen en leveren in het najaar zaden voor vogels om van te snoepen. Met onze reuze zonnebloemen kan je bovendien ook nog een leuke wedstrijd winnen!

Zo kan je de € 100,= cadeaubon winnen:

1) Plant de zonnebloemzaden en laat je zonnebloemen groeien!
2) Maak een foto van de mooiste, hoogste of grappigste zonnebloem

Met deze kweek tips gaat het zeker lukken:

Plek: plant deze reuzen in de volle zon.  Alle zonnebloemen hebben minstens 6 tot 8 uur zonlicht per dag nodig en meer is beter.  Zonnebloemen gebruiken de energie van de zon om hun enorme groei te voeden, dus hoe meer uren zonlicht de planten krijgen, hoe robuuster hun groei.

Grond: Maak de grond los en vul de grond aan met compost, organische meststof of lavameel. Hoe dieper je de grond losmaakt (tot wel 25-50 cm), hoe beter ze hun wortels kunnen uitbreiden. Deze gaan soms wel een meter diep de grond in.

Ruimte: Als je reuzenzonnebloemen kweekt, plant de zaden dan direct in de grond waar je ze wilt laten groeien.  Plant de zaden 40 cm uit elkaar in rijen en plant ze niet te diep (ca. 2 cm).  Hoe meer grond je elke plant geeft, hoe groter de plant zal groeien. Als je heel fanatiek wilt winnen, verwijder dan de minst groeiende zaailingen en geef de stevigste veel vrije ruimte (een meter of meer) rondom. Wil je graag de grootste bloem kweken, verwijder dan alle zijscheuten, zodat de plant zijn energie kan richten op die ene hoofdbloem.

Verzorging: Houd de grond vochtig door regelmatig water te geven totdat de zonnebloemen boven de grond komen.  Verwijder het onkruid. Als de planten eenmaal goed groeien, is één keer per week water geven voldoende. Om ze tot wedstrijdformaat te laten groeien, moet je ze regelmatig voeden bv met organische mest.  Als ze veel wind vangen kan je ze wat ondersteunen met stokken en touw.

Zonnebloemen hebben verder weinig verzorging nodig maar vertroetel ze een beetje om die allermooiste of allergrootste te krijgen! We zien jullie leuke foto’s graag verschijnen op social media.
